The Madrid International Arbitration Center (Centro Internacional de Arbitraje de Madrid, or CIAM due to its initials in Spanish) is the outcome of a merger of the international activity of the Madrid Court of Arbitration (CAM), the Civil and Commercial Court of Arbitration (CIMA, due to its initials in Spanish) and the Spanish Court of Arbitration, in addition to benefiting from the involvement of the Madrid bar association as a strategic partner.

This project involves its participants pooling their experience and efforts in order to offer users an independent, transparent and efficient internationally focused dispute resolution service.

CIAM’s plenary committee is made up of thirteen professionals of recognised standing in the legal world and arbitration community: José María Alonso, José Antonio Caínzos, Begoña Castro, Adolfo Díaz-Ambrona, Josef Fröhlingsdorf, Elena Otero-Novas, Urquiola de Palacio, Giulio Palermo, Pilar Perales, Dámaso Riaño, Julio César Rivera, Francisco Ruiz Risueño and Juan Serrada.

The plenary committee has appointed José Antonio Caínzos (chair) and Elena Otero-Novas, Urquiola de Palacio and Juan Serrada (deputy chairs) to lead CIAM.

CIAM’s secretary general is Mélanie Riofrío, who has three deputy secretaries to support her in the discharge of her functions: Adolfo Díaz-Ambrona, Dámaso Riaño and Francisco Ruiz Risueño.

CIAM will administer international arbitration proceedings in accordance with the provisions of article 3 of Spanish Law 60/2003 on Arbitration.

The international arbitration proceedings that CIAM will administer will arise from: (i) arbitration agreements identifying CIAM as the administrating institution; and (ii) arbitration agreements identifying any of the four participating entities – including the Spanish Court of Arbitration – as the administrating institution, provided that they are entered into after 1 January 2020.

International cases arising out of arbitration agreements that identify any of the four participating entities (including the Spanish Court of Arbitration) as administrating entity but that were entered into before 1 January 2020 will initially be administered by the relevant participating entity. However, the parties will be invited to consider moving the case to CIAM and if they agree to do so, CIAM will administer the proceedings. For these purposes, the parties will receive the information necessary to allow them to assess the possibility of mutually agreeing to submit to CIAM.

International cases that are currently being processed by any of the four participating entities (including the Spanish Court of Arbitration) will continue to be administered by the relevant entity until they are concluded, with no change.
